India’s electric vehicle (EV) landscape is evolving at lightning speed. As of mid-2025, there are over 29,000 public EV charging stations across the country—a fivefold growth compared to FY22.
Highlights:
State Leaders: Karnataka leads with 6,097 stations, followed by Maharashtra (4,155), and Uttar Pradesh (2,326).
Central Initiatives: Projects under the PM E-DRIVE and FAME-II (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) schemes have sparked this infrastructure boom. Funding support, GST cuts for EVs, and public-private partnerships have fueled network expansion.
Major Industry Moves: Tesla’s debut Supercharging station in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on August 4 marks a watershed moment, opening the door for global players and setting new standards in fast-charging technology.
Remaining Challenges:
While progress is impressive, the charger-to-EV ratio poses a concern—currently, there is just one public charger for every 235 vehicles. Experts warn that infrastructure must keep pace with EV adoption, calling for further ramp-up of both urban and highway charging stations to support India’s green mobility ambitions.
