India has marked a historic achievement by crossing 100 GW of installed solar capacity in early 2025, solidifying its position as a global force in renewable energy adoption. This milestone is not just a number—it reflects years of sustained policy support, innovation, and public-private collaboration.

Major Drivers:

  • Government Ambitions: The government’s commitment is clear with its goal to reach 500 GW of non-fossil energy by 2030. National programs like the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana are set to bring solar rooftops to 10 million households, while the Pradhan Mantri KUSUM (Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan) Scheme focuses on solarizing agriculture by supporting solar pumps and decentralized plants for farmers.

  • Financial Incentives & Policy Support: Production Linked Incentives (PLIs) and realigned Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPOs) have accelerated both domestic solar manufacturing and deployment.

  • Tapping India’s Solar Potential: With an average of 300 sunny days each year, India has a natural advantage, enabling consistent solar generation even in rural or semi-urban areas.

Impact:

These efforts have energized not only power generation but also local economies. Over 84 GW of additional solar is under implementation and nearly 47.5 GW is in the pipeline, indicating the surge is far from over. As rural electrification and distributed solar gain momentum, millions more Indians are expected to gain reliable, clean power access in the coming years.
